3 Food Recalls You Need To Know About This Week

This week, we’re taking a closer look at ice cream, fresh salsa, and frozen food—and you should, too. Here’s how to identify the items that could make you or your family sick.

Mini Ice Cream Bars Recalled for Dangerous Hidden Allergen

On November 3, Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, Inc. recalled its Häagen-Dazs Dark Chocolate Mini Bars after discovering the product may contain a different ice cream product—one that contains wheat. Häagen-Dazs Dark Chocolate Mini Bars aren’t made with any wheat-based ingredients, so the packaging doesn’t disclose this allergen on the label. This poses a serious health threat to anyone with a wheat allergy, according to the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA)

This recall doesn’t include all Häagen-Dazs Mini Bars—only the six-count packages of its chocolate ice cream flavor with dark chocolate coating. The bars were stocked at Kroger and Giant Eagle stores in 31 states. If you bought Häagen-Dazs recently, this product could be lurking in your freezer.

Fresh Salsa Sold at Kroger Recalled for Listeria Contamination

Between October 30 and November 3, Supreme Produce and Snow Fruit both announced recalls of fresh peach salsa. Both brands share the same peach supplier, Moonlight Companies, which announced a major peach recall last week due to listeria contamination.

For most people, eating food contaminated with the foodborne pathogen could lead to common food poisoning symptoms such as nausea, stomach pain, and diarrhea. However, for certain groups of people—including pregnant women, young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems—the infection can be far more serious and potentially fatal.

The affected fresh peach salsas have been taken off the shelf at Kroger stores, but you’ll want to check the labels on any salsa in your refrigerator. (Find more packaging details here on the FDA’s website: Supreme Produce and Snow Fruit).

Be sure to toss the salsa if you have it, because it’s not safe to eat. If you have questions, your best bet is to contact the peach supplier directly (Moonlight Companies) by phone at 855-215-5017, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.

Frozen Chicken and Beef Croquettes Recalled After Dangerous Labeling Mishap

On November 4, Brazilian Taste of Lexington, South Carolina, announced a recall of 4,120 pounds of chicken and beef croquettes because the packaging doesn’t disclose they contain a dangerous allergen: sesame. People with a sesame allergy could experience a life-threatening reaction after eating a food that contains hidden sesame.
