3 Food Recalls You Need to Know About This Week

Several recalls were issued this week that may affect your last grocery haul. Ahead, learn why a frozen dessert, raw beef, and crackers are under fire.

ALDI Frozen Dessert Recalled for Allergen Exposure 

Camerican International of Paramus, NJ recalled boxes of ALDI’s Casa Mamita Churro Bites Filled with Chocolate Hazelnut Cream this week in select stores nationwide. A consumer alerted ALDI that the mini churros contain milk, but that information wasn’t disclosed anywhere on the packaging. An investigation revealed the company’s production and packaging processes had a “temporary breakdown,” leading to a misprint on the label. 

Milk is one of the most common food allergies in the nation, and if someone unknowingly ate this treat, the side effects could be severe. Fortunately, as of June 6, no one has reported an illness due to eating the churro bites.

If you purchased this frozen treat in one of the above states, you’re eligible for a full refund and should return the churro bites to your local ALDI. Ground Beef Sold at Whole Foods May Be Contaminated With E. Coli

On June 3, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert for Organic Rancher ground beef. The reason? It may be contaminated with E. coli. The raw beef was sold at Whole Foods Market in 26 states, and the FSIS is concerned that the product may still be in people’s fridges or freezers.

E. coli is a type of foodborne pathogen that can lead to severe gastrointestinal upset, including bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting. Symptoms can develop within a few days of consuming the contaminated food. While most healthy individuals recover without needing medical attention, children under the age of five, adults 65 and over, and those with weakened immune systems could become seriously ill. 

As of now, no one appears to have been sickened by this recall. Still, the FSIS urges anyone who bought the affected item to throw it away and request a refund from Whole Foods. 

Popular Crackers Recalled for Undeclared Allergen

On June 4, the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) notified the public that Firehook is recalling one lot of its Classic Sea Salt Organic Crackers distributed across 11 states. The staple cracker isn’t supposed to contain sesame seeds. A packaging error occurred, which led to one of Firehook’s sesame-containing crackers (either its Multigrain Za’atar Crackers or Everything Crackers) to have the Classic Sea Salt label. 

While the FDA announcement didn’t reveal where the crackers were sold, we do know that Firehook Crackers are currently stocked at the following major retailers:

• Wegmans
• Whole Foods
• Target.com
• Walmart.com
• Amazon.com

If you purchased the affected Firehook crackers, you’re eligible for a refund. Just return the box to the retailer.
