Summer is a time of burgers. Whenever my husband and I plan a grill-out, we talk about all sorts of ideas, but we tend to land on the great crowd-pleaser: burgers. The only problem with this plan is feeding the vegetarians. And, to be fair, I don’t tend to eat much red meat myself.
While I’ve grilled Impossible and Beyond Meat in the past, not all vegetarians appreciate their extreme meatiness and/or list of mystery ingredients. On the other end of the spectrum, many packaged veggie burgers don’t hit all of the notes you’re looking for when you bite into a burger.
Then I tried Dr. Praeger’s Perfect Burger. And then I tried them again because they were so tasty. Now, they’ll have a special place on my grill all summer long.
Dr. Praeger’s Perfect Burgers
- Price: $6 to 7 for a pack of two
- Why I Love It: The patties deliver a super satisfying taste and texture, all while being plant-based. They’re great on the grill, too!

Why I Love Dr. Praeger’s Perfect Burgers
Upon opening the package, you’ll notice the individually-wrapped patties are fairly thick and the perfect size for a burger bun. The instructions include options for the air fryer and the oven or toaster oven. I can attest that they will work on the stovetop, too, just use medium heat and cover them for part of the time to fully heat through. They’re also great on the grill cooked directly from frozen over medium heat, flipping as needed.
To be plant-based, they look very similar to real burgers, but don’t have that pink ground meat thing going on like Impossible Meat. This makes them super easy to heat up, since they won’t break apart, and less gross for long-time vegetarians.
One of the best things about the Perfect Burger is the texture. It’s toothsome enough to mock ground beef pretty well without being too meaty. I find a lot of veggie burgers too soft, and this patty feels substantial. It also tastes great! Savory and umami-y, they’re perfect for loading with condiments, toppings, and (if you desire) melted cheese.
Bonus: the Perfect Burger has 20 grams of protein per patty, putting the veg-only burger on par with a beef burger. That’s thanks to textured pea protein, which is the primary ingredient and gives the burger its satisfying texture. So no one will leave the BBQ hungry.
You’ll find Dr. Praeger’s Perfect Burgers at many mainstream grocery stores, like Kroger, Publix, Ralph’s Whole Foods, and more. Other Dr. Praeger’s burger patties are sold at Costco from time to time, and I’m hoping these will make an appearance since I can’t seem to stop buying them. I’m keeping a stash in the freezer this summer for any impromptu grill-outs.
