This $1.25 Dollar Tree Is a Must-Have for Summer

Earlier this summer, I found myself standing in the aisle of my local grocery store, staring at a $7.99 package of “premium” s’mores marshmallows and wondering if I’d lost my mind.

My kids had been begging for homemade s’mores, and I was mentally calculating whether fancy marshmallows were worth nearly 10 bucks when I remembered something I’d seen at the Dollar Tree.

For months, I’d been passing by the bags of $1.25 Jet-Puffed Stackers Marshmallows at the discount store. I hadn’t picked them up because I didn’t need them at the time, but when s’mores season was finally upon us, I was relieved that I remembered that special product. I put the overpriced marshmallows back and headed home with a smile.

Why I Love Jet-Puffed’s Stackers Marshmallows

The flat marshmallows turned out to be a fantastic summer find. In contrast to conventional round marshmallows that roll off or never quite fit between graham crackers, this square-shaped version is perfectly designed for s’mores success: They’re flat, stable, and make a treat that’s sure to satisfy.

I’ve written about marshmallows before, specifically the Stuffed Puffs brand, which I love, but for an entirely different purpose. The Stuffed Puffs are designed for snacking (and they make an excellent baking upgrade), whereas the stackers are different in the best possible way. They’re not trying to be fancy; they’re just trying to be the best at what they do.

Their flat, square shape helps them to toast evenly over the fire, creating that golden brown crust many of us crave. When you sandwich them between graham crackers and chocolate, they fit perfectly, with no marshmallow spillage and no lopsided s’mores that fall apart the moment you take a bite. Ultimately, this means less sticky hands for little kids.

To be clear, your kids’ hands will still be a little messy, but much less so than round marshmallows, because the revised shape lives within the boundaries of the flat-edged graham crackers; even my four-year-old handled them well.

The stackers are also excellent for s’mores bars, where everything gets layered in a pan over a pressed-in crust. Similarly (although I haven’t tried this yet), I think they’d layer well in baked goods like brownies, cookie bars, blondies, pudding cakes, and the like.

Do you remember Gaby Dalkin’s Slutty Brownies? Well, she made a s’more version of them, where the stackers would work perfectly.

Although summer is in season for s’mores, these stackers are ideal for a wide range of treats year-round. For this reason, I have decided to keep a backup bag in my pantry, and you should, too.
