My Go-To 3-Ingredient Cocktail Is Refreshing and Cheap



Not to brag, but I’ve been drinking Aperol Spritzes since before it was cool. I’m not sure if that’s because I’m a trendsetter or just old, but let’s go with the former. I’m pretty much always in the mood for the bubbly, slightly bitter taste of this iconic drink. 

The only issue? Usually I only want one—which is certainly due to my age—and that’s hard to do with a bottle of prosecco. Recently, as a workaround, my go-to summer cocktail has been the Spaghett, which is light beer mixed with Aperol and fresh lemon juice. 

What Is a Spaghett Cocktail?

While the Spaghett or “beer spritz” hasn’t been around quite as long as the Aperol Spritz, it’s had a loyal following since it was dreamed up by bartender Reed Cahill of Wet City Brewery in Baltimore, Maryland. It’s gained traction over the years and has popped up on trendy cocktail menus throughout the country. However, much like its inspiration, you can whip up this cocktail in a snap at home—no foams, fat-washes, or cocktail smokers required. 

A Spaghett could not be easier to make: All you have to do is take a swig of the beer (to make room in the bottle), then add some Aperol and fresh lemon juice. It’s light, refreshing, and not too potent. Best of all? It doesn’t require the commitment of popping a cork and finishing a bottle of sparkling wine.

Key Ingredients

For the beer, the classic choice here is Miller High Life—after all, it is the Champagne of beers! That said, you don’t need to stress over a specific brand—you just want something light, crisp, and not too bitter.

Other great options include Stella Artois or even Peroni. You can’t go wrong with something in the lager category. Canned beer works too, but I prefer a bottle for the way it looks and sips. A Spaghett in a bottle has a beautiful coral hue that just screams happy hour. 

For the aperitif, I prefer Aperol, but you can play around with that as well. My husband likes this with Campari as it packs a bit more of a punch. And for the citrus, I love the summery, lemonade-like flavor that lemon juice provides here, but the drink is delicious with any fresh citrus you have, particularly grapefruit or blood orange juice. 

Tips for Making a Spaghett 

  • I use a small funnel I picked up on Amazon to add the Aperol to the beer bottle, but I’ve also used a large piping tip to help me accurately pour in a pinch. You can even use a regular old liquid measuring cup with a pour spout.
  • The salt in the recipe is totally optional, but I find that adding a pinch of salt to almost any cocktail makes it brighter and more vibrant.

How To Make My 3-Ingredient Spaghett Cocktail

For one serving, you’ll need:

  • 1 (12-ounce) bottle Miller High Life beer (or lager-style beer of choice), chilled
  • 1 ounce Aperol (or aperitif of choice), chilled
  • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice, chilled
  • 1 pinch salt, optional

Pour off (or drink!) about 1 1/2 ounces (3 tablespoons) of the beer. Place a small funnel into the mouth of the bottle and pour in the Aperol, followed by the lemon juice. Go slow and lift the funnel out as needed, since the beer will bubble up. Add a pinch of salt, if desired. Sip and enjoy!
