Jerky is typically an easy, portable, and protein-packed snack for busy days. Before you tear into your next bag, though, make sure it doesn’t contain any unwanted ingredients. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) warns that certain jerky products sold at Costco and Sam’s Club may contain pieces of metal.
On October 24, LSI, Inc. announced a recall of 2.2 million pounds of its Korean barbecue pork jerky after receiving multiple complaints from consumers who found pieces of metal in the jerky. LSI says that the wiry metal is from the conveyor belt used during the production of its jerky.
The company says there have been “no confirmed reports of injury” due to people eating the contaminated jerky, but as you can imagine, it does pose a health risk—anything sharp or wiry can damage your mouth, throat, and intestines if eaten.
The now-recalled bags of jerky were sold at Costco and Sam’s Club locations across the country.
