The $14.99 ALDI Freezer Find That Totally Passes As Homemade



Being nosy at the grocery store has its benefits. Recently, I overheard one shopper raving to another about a pie in the ALDI frozen food section. She had five Village PieBaker’s Strawberry-Rhubarb Pies in her cart, so I immediately put one in mine, too.

This seasonal strawberry-rhubarb pie was knock-our-socks-off delicious and, thanks to some advice from the pie aficionado at ALDI, I learned a few tricks to make it look and taste like homemade. Here’s why you need to run to ALDI as soon as possible for one (or five) of these spring pies.

Why I’m Obsessed with Village Baker’s Strawberry-Rhubarb Pies at ALDI 

Strawberry rhubarb pie is one of those special seasonal treats that can take a lot of time and effort to make. You’ve got to find great strawberries and fresh rhubarb, make a pie crust, and bring it all together, which can take hours. So the fact that ALDI even had one in their freezer section was reason enough for me to try it. I was astounded by just how good the baked pie was.

The tender, buttery pie crust bakes up beautifully during the 80 minutes it spends in the oven at 350°F. The recommended hour of cooling time feels painfully long as the smell of the baking and cooling is intoxicating, but cooling completely helps thicken the filling to a perfectly sliceable consistency.

The strawberry rhubarb filling is the star of this pie—it has nice, visible pieces of both sweet strawberries and tangy rhubarb that buckle under the weight of your fork to become a pleasantly smooth, balanced bite. This crust is slightly savory and keeps the pie from being too sweet.

While this Village Baker’s Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie wasn’t as affordable as you might expect from ALDI at $14.99, I learned from Reddit that they are sold elsewhere for $20 to $25. They are produced by a small company out of Nebraska and the quality for the price is evident in the finished pie.

How to Make This Pie Even Better

When I ended up in the same self-checkout line as the woman I’d overheard raving about the treat, I asked her more about the pies. She told me she often passes these Village PieBaker’s Strawberry-Rhubarb Pies off as homemade pies by brushing them with egg wash and sprinkling with coarse sugar during the baking process.

I’ve since been back to ALDI to stock up on a few more before their seasonal stint in the freezer section runs out, and I highly suggest you do the same!
