The Retro Party Mix I’m Making on Repeat This Holiday

  • This retro-inspired mix combines Chex, Cheerios, and pretzels in one batch.
  • You can use any cereal and mix-ins you like to customize your own blend.

I make a batch of Chex party mix at least once a month. My family loves it for snacking—for grown-up cocktail gatherings and dinner parties with kids alike. I use any kind of cereal and my favorite mix-ins. There are so many variations.

So when I saw a retro party mix on Reddit that combines elements of classic Chex party mix with a “nuts and bolts” mix (made with Cheerios and pretzels instead of Chex), I had to try it right away. My party mix-loving family raved so much about it!

Why You’ll Love This Retro Party Mix

The recipe on Reddit is a 50+ year old recipe shared from neighbors. It also differs from Chex’s original snack mix recipe in a few key ways.

In addition to the classic combination of wheat, corn, and rice Chex cereal, this recipe calls for Cheerios. Adding this smaller cereal makes the mix even more snackable.

And while some recipes for party mix call for butter, margarine, or even bacon drippings, this one uses vegetable oil mixed with the seasonings and Worcestershire sauce in a blender. You’re essentially emulsifying the vegetable oil and Worcestershire into a dressing that clings to every nook of the snack mix. It’s so smart!
