This $1.50 Dollar Tree Find Keeps All My Holiday Baking Supplies Organized



By the time my holiday baking projects are in full swing, my pantry no longer hides the evidence. It’s pretty common to find things like split bags, missing clips, and duplicates of ingredients I’d already forgotten I had. So this year, I decided to do something about it!

I have been eyeing the Dollar Tree’s cereal canisters for months, and although I have something similar, these ones are much better quality. So I took the plunge and picked up a few. A just $1.50 each, they’re affordable, surprisingly sturdy, and they ended up being a great solution for organizing my holiday baking supplies.

Why I Love the Dollar Tree’s Plastic Cereal Containers

These containers are tall and slim, with frosty-looking plastic bases and flip-top pouring lids. The flip-top lids are one of the biggest selling features because I can open them with one hand when I’m already elbow-deep in cookie dough or attending to one of my children’s needs.

A container holds about 9 1/2 cups but aren’t at all bulky. The slim design actually fits nicely into a variety of spaces. They’re also decent-looking (in a neutral way), so they don’t stand out or feel out of place the way that old-school yellow Tupperware does. I know because I have some!

Most importantly, they do the job of making my baking area look and feel tidier without me having to think too hard about it. That, in and of itself, feels like a big win.

How I Use the Dollar Tree’s Cereal Containers

Instead of waiting for the bags to inevitably rip, I decanted all of my main holiday baking staples into them—things like chocolate chips, shredded coconut, oats, and sugar, basically the ingredients I reach for over and over again.

Now, everything has a designated place, and I can pull them out, pour from them, and put them back without creating a mess or losing anything. The lids make it easy to shake out ingredients like oats or pour chocolate chips directly into the dough. This works well for me because I use a scale for most of my baking, and I don’t often need measuring cups. However, even if you use measuring cups, the wide opening still makes it easy to scoop or pour from them without spilling.

I don’t currently have all of my baking supplies in them, but I definitely could. They’re the perfect canister for things like brown sugar, powdered sugar, cornmeal, and the three types of flour I always keep on hand, including all-purpose, whole wheat, and, lately, this Bob’s Red Mill high fiber flour, which is a one-to-one substitute for all-purpose, but with more fiber. I still store longer-term flour in airtight containers, but these work well for what I use day to day.

Even though I bought them to help organize my holiday baking supplies, I know they’ll be useful in the long term, too. If you don’t bake a lot or your baking quiets down after the holidays, they’re easy to repurpose or use elsewhere.

In the kitchen, they’re obviously great for cereal and ideal for storing everyday ingredients like rice and pasta, as well as common kids’ snacks like homemade trail mix or party mix, Goldfish, cookies, and crackers.

If organizing feels overwhelming, this is the kind of change that doesn’t require much thought or effort and pays off right away. It’s the busy parent’s version of a little Christmas miracle.
