I Tried the Newest Potato Chips at Trader Joes, and Immediately Bought a Second Bag

In a pivotal 30 Rock episode, Liz Lemon generously shares the advice to “put potato chips on a sandwich.” I had never tried this before, but if I were to take sandwich-based advice from anyone, it had to be Liz Lemon.

The next day, I went to the nearest Jimmy John’s to order my Turkey Tom and a bag of potato chips. I felt like I had unlocked a new level of culinary knowledge. Every sandwich is better with chips!

On my last Trader Joe’s run, I saw bags of Deli Sandwich Potato Chips on the shelf and knew I had to try them. If Liz Lemon knows sandwiches, Trader Joe’s knows potato chips. It was time for the deli sandwich chip-ception of my dreams.

Trader Joe’s Deli Sandwich Potato Chips

  • Price: $2.99 for a 7-ounce bag
  • Why I Love It:

You can find potato chips that taste like deli sandwich ingredients (jalapeño, dill pickle, cheddar, onion, and many more). Now, Trader Joe’s has combined all those flavors into one chip.

TJ’s describes its Deli Sandwich Style Potato Chips as being “stacked with the flavors of a classic deli sandwich—without the sliced ham or cheese!” (I should note, though, that the chips do contain dairy.) The label recommends eating them with a sandwich or with a scoop of “creamy spinach dip.”

When I bought the chips, the cashier gushed about how good they were. He said he was anxious that this flavor would sell out too quickly. I told him that I was a food writer, and he encouraged me to write a bad review so no one would buy them.

Sorry, Jesse, I cannot tell a lie!

These chips are an absolute delight. They’re super crunchy, and full of deli sandwich flavor—if I had to pick the sandwich they taste the most like, I would say Reuben. There is a distinct hit of rye flavor, and some notes of mustard, plus the acidity of a pickle. But they also still taste like potato chips!

How I Tested the Potato Chips

I ate a bowl of the deli sandwich chips plain, and then I added a layer to my homemade deli-style sandwich: sourdough bread, yellow mustard, mayo, roast turkey breast, hard salami, romaine, and provolone. It was heaven on a plate!

Then I ate more chips after the sandwich. I also made the same sandwich for dinner. I ate the whole bag of chips in one day, and then I had to go back for more.

I need the good people at Trader Joe’s to see this story and decide to make the Deli Sandwich Style chips a permanent addition!
