Nature’s Own Just Released a New Line of Bread, and I’m a Big Fan

By the time I got to high school, only my mom and I were left in the house. She worked more than full-time and still did a good job of feeding a cranky, hungry teenager (me).

Even with both of us eating at home, we couldn’t make it through a full loaf of sandwich bread before it turned stale or moldy.

Fast-forward to today, and I still have the same issue. My husband and I don’t eat tons of sandwiches and toast, and as much as we hate it, we inevitably end up tossing a couple of bad slices from every loaf. It’s honestly turned me off to buying sandwich bread, since I prefer it fresh rather than defrosted from the freezer (the other place our leftover bread ends up).

When I tried Nature’s Own new small loaves, I was genuinely delighted. My husband and I easily finished off a loaf in a week, so even the last pieces were still soft and fresh. Finally, sandwich bread sold in my size!

Nature’s Own has rolled these small loaves out slowly. The brand released its Homestyle White and Ancient Grain in small loaves regionally last year, and added 100% Whole Wheat, Hawaiian, and Sourdough to the lineup in May. The full roster is now available nationwide at a variety of stores. Near me, I’ve found them at Ralph’s, Target, and Food4Less.

My personal favorites are Ancient Grain, which is soft and flecked with “ancient grains” (whatever that means), 100% whole wheat, which is still tender despite being loaded with whole grain flour, and Hawaiian. I used a Hawaiian loaf to make patty melts, and it was perfect for the job—squishy and lightly sweet.

I told my mom about these little loaves, and she was genuinely excited, too. With 12 slices, it’s the perfect size for a household of one or two. No more waste!
