I have a love-hate relationship with bulk food stores. I love the prices, the freedom to scoop just the amount I need, and the rows of giant bins filled with lentils, different flours, and fancy salts.
I hate the flimsy plastic bags they provide. They’re thin, fragile, and always leave a trail of something in their wake. Most recently, I found coconut sugar granules flecked throughout my shopping tote and kitchen floor.
One day, determined to do better, I picked up a single square glass jar from Dollar Tree. I figured it would be perfect for buying and storing that coconut sugar–and maybe look a little nicer in my pantry. But this simple $1.25 jar turned out to be one of the smartest purchases I’ve made, and I’ve since gone back to buy several more.

Why I Love the Dollar Tree’s Square Glass Jars
The square shape is brilliant. I didn’t fully appreciate how inefficient round jars were until I lined up a few of these on a shelf. They nestle right up against each other, side by side like little blocks. There’s no wasted space or weird gaps between jars. The shelf is just a satisfying, tidy row of lentils, oats, chia seeds, and, yes, coconut sugar.
The quality is also surprisingly good. The glass is thick and solid, as is the plastic lid, which I’ve discovered I prefer because it’s lighter and less clangy than metal. It also screws on tightly, which keeps everything fresh.
The wide-mouth opening makes it easy to fit measuring cups inside, and when I need to refill them, I bring the clean jars to the bulk food store and do my business. Plus, I love that the smooth, flat sides were thoughtfully designed for labeling.
What started as a single jar for my coconut sugar quickly multiplied. After my third trip to the Dollar Tree, I realized I either (a) had a problem or (b) was on to something good. It was the latter. My bulk supplies are now a satisfying display of clearly visible ingredients in tidy rows.
I’ve labeled them with black labels and a white chalk marker (also from Dollar Tree), and I find it deeply satisfying to see everything lined up in their matching containers.
Isn’t it great when little things make life better in meaningful ways? These basic square glass jars have done that for me. At $1.25 each, they’ve brought a quiet order to my kitchen, and I’m happy to say those coconut sugar trail days are officially behind me.
