The $1.50 Dollar Tree Find I Wish I’d Found Sooner

For more than a year, my broom situation was inefficient and embarrassing. A couple of years ago, I made myself proud by building and installing a pegboard to hold things like our mop, brooms, dustpans, and even an Ikea plastic bag holder. I’m not particularly handy and, after about a year, my handmade board fell off the wall.

I knew that I needed bigger screws to keep it in place, but the drilling intimidated me. It wasn’t the drilling itself, per se. We live in an old home with lath-and-plaster walls, which can easily crack and split when punctured. So, putting stuff in (and on) the walls requires a thoughtful strategy and specific supplies. That said, the pieces of my pegboard just sat there for months while I tried to figure out what to do.

If you find yourself dealing with drill-hesitancy, they’re ridiculously easy to install. I cleaned the wall with a bit of rubbing alcohol first to make sure the adhesive would stick well, pressed firmly for about 30 seconds, and that was it. 

Once I organized everything, my daily routine felt better too. Instead of wrestling a broom out of a pile every time I needed to sweep, it became a one-handed operation. I just pull whatever I’m grabbing straight out, and the handle releases. When I’m done, I can slide it right back in. It may sound like a small detail, but when you’re doing a quick cleanup before guests arrive or sweeping up after dinner, those little frictions add up.

For example, they’d be a dream in the garage for garden tools, they’d also be perfect in a laundry room for holding feather dusters or extendable drying racks, and, unconventionally, if I stick them inside a bathroom cabinet, they’d also work well to keep my hot hair utensils, like my straightener and curling iron.
