The $2.99 ALDI Find I’m Adding to My Pantry



We adore asparagus in my family. Though we try to eat it seasonally in the spring, we enjoy having it year-round. So, when I spied a jar of white asparagus on the shelves at my local ALDI, I had to try it and see if it’s something I should stock in my pantry during the cooler months when the fresh stuff is hard to find.

Why I Love ALDI Deutsche Küche White Asparagus

I found the nearly 12-ounce jar of Deutsche Küche White Asparagus Peeled on the shelves near the checkout at my local ALDI and purchased it for $2.99. The narrow jar contains about 12 spears, or two servings. The ingredients are quite basic: just white asparagus, water, and salt. When I opened the jar, I caught a slight whiff of vegetal asparagus.

To try it, I first just warmed up a couple of spears of asparagus in the microwave for about 20 seconds. They came out fork-tender and quite sweet. I didn’t even add salt or butter to them, and I thought they already tasted pretty good. My 15-year-old son said he liked the flavor, but he wasn’t particularly fond of the texture. My husband also thought they were pretty tasty.

Although their flavor didn’t need any dressing up, they were soft in texture, so I decided to try cooking with them. I first used them in omelettes. I chopped up the spears, then added them to some sautéed shallots in the pan, followed by the egg. These omelettes were so delicious with just those three ingredients, but fresh chèvre or grated Parmesan would be a great addition when you’re feeling fancy.

Since they tasted good in omelettes, the asparagus would also be great to add to other egg dishes, like frittatas, summer quiches, and breakfast casseroles. I think they would basically pair well with any bacon and egg combinations.

They’d also be perfect chopped up and added to dinner casseroles for an easy vegetable addition, or as the base for a quick asparagus soup. To make it, I would purée the asparagus first in my food processor, then set it aside. I’d sauté about a quarter of a cup of either diced yellow onions or shallots, then add the asparagus purée, heavy cream, and chicken broth, along with a little salt and pepper. It’d be an elegant and simple soup that could be paired with a salad for an easy summer dinner when you don’t have time to run out and get fresh asparagus.

In any case, I’m headed back to ALDI to grab a few more jars just in case they disappear from shelves soon.
