Why I Love ALDI Benton’s Fruit Puff Pastry Squares

When I spied these little bags of Benton’s Puff Pastry Squares, what caught my eye was the flavor. As I looked closer, I realized they were the spitting image of my granny’s cookies.

My Granny Hurt was an excellent cook and famous for her kolache. She made several flavors, but my dad’s and my favorite flavor was apricot. I swear these cookies were a doppelgänger of her treats.

Though kolache has a slightly different texture than puff pastry dough, the filling truly took me back to Granny’s kitchen. Most fruit fillings are light and jammy, but these are thick and almost viscous, as if dried fruit was stewed and then used as a filling, which is what Granny did with her fillings.

The cookies are crunchy at first, but they’re also light and airy, like puff pastry that’s been baked. “Then they become chewy,” my son told me before he then said, “Take these away from me. I’m going to finish the whole bag, they’re so good.” He almost did end up finishing the 6.53-ounce bag.

I returned to try the other two flavors, strawberry and cherry. My son says the strawberry squares are his favorite, and my husband prefers the cherry. I loved the apricot best, but they’re all quite tasty.

These cookies are a great dessert. My son likes to munch on them while he’s studying. I like them with milk or coffee because they’re incredibly delicious when dunked. But really, you don’t need to pair them with anything, as they’re so good by themselves.

I’m happy I didn’t stick to my list and found a little surprise tucked away on ALDI’s shelves. Those puff pastry squares didn’t just satisfy a craving—they stirred up memories and reminded me that sometimes, the best treats are the ones you didn’t plan on.
