As a fan of ALDI’s gelato, I found the summer release of new flavors a must-try event. Ever since my first taste of creamy gelato, on a trip to Florence many years ago, I’ve been obsessed with it. Of course, trying any luscious treat while standing in a sunlit piazza in a breathtakingly beautiful city would be memorable. But when it’s the Italian version of ice cream, it’s swoon-worthy.
So when new Sundae Shoppe gelato flavors drop at ALDI, I’m ready to give them a tasting. Because gelato is traditionally made with less fat and more intense flavorings, I wanted to see if these versions are as smooth, creamy, and intense as the gelato I remember so well.
ALDI Sundae Shoppe Gelato
- Price: $3.39 for a 28.5-ounce container
- Why I Love It: The summer gelato at ALDI is just as good as my favorite year-round flavors. I especially love the Mocha Cookie Crumble with its strong espresso flavor and chocolate cookie crumble.

Mocha Cookie Crumble
One of the great traditions in Italy is the afternoon “spuntino,” or snack. When you don’t eat dinner until after 8 p.m., you need a little pick-me-up to keep going. They have a few bites with a glass of wine, and it’s ever so civilized.
But hear me out, I think a coffee-infused scoop of gelato is the perfect bite to kick that afternoon slump to the curb. This mocha is not your usual coffee ice cream with just a hint of coffee flavor. You can actually taste the bracing bitterness of espresso in the best way. Crumbled chocolate cookies give you a little texture to break through the creaminess. This one will be on repeat until it is gone.
Birthday Cake
What exactly does birthday cake taste like? I’ve always thought it was kind of odd to have a flavor that encompasses all birthday cakes, but there it is. This gelato delivers on the agreed-upon cake flavors, with plenty of fragrant vanilla and buttery, frosting-inspired nostalgia throughout. It’s also capped with rainbow sprinkles for that festive birthday feel.
If you like a sweet, buttery-tasting gelato, this is for you. I know there are devotees of all things confetti and sprinkles, so check this one out if that’s your jam.
Peach Cobbler
Summer is peach cobbler time, with the best peaches ripening on the trees. The combination of juicy, sweet peaches and a crumble topping is a beloved classic, usually served with ice cream or whipped cream. In this cobbler-inspired gelato, a creamy vanilla base is swirled with a peach sauce, then topped with a sweet brown crumble.
The vanilla gelato base is lovely, letting the peachy swirls deliver hits of fruit flavor. My only complaint is that there isn’t more of the delicious crumble. This will be perfect with some sliced fresh peaches—or to console yourself if the peaches you bought aren’t ripe yet.
These seasonal specials are only here for a short time, so give them a try before they are gone.
