I have a confession to make: When I was a kid, I was obsessed with poinsettias. Yes, the Christmas plants are undoubtedly beautiful, but I couldn’t get enough. I would excitedly point them out to my mom and say “Look!” every time we walked by one. This love was so intense that one year for Halloween, I dressed up like a poinsettia.
Imagine my delight this year when I saw this poinsettia cocktail making the rounds on social media as a fun and festive option for holiday entertaining. I felt like a kid again, sending the recipe to my mom and saying, “Look!”
I know that white poinsettias exist—and they’re gorgeous—but this cocktail is a celebration of their bright red brethren. And this drink falls into my favorite category of cocktail: ones made with champagne or prosecco—like a French 75 or Aperol spritz.
What’s in a Poinsettia?
This cocktail is a true crowd-pleaser with only three ingredients—and there’s a good chance you already have them stocked at home. You’ll need prosecco, orange liqueur (like Triple Sec or Grand Marnier), and cranberry juice.
Grab a champagne flute or other tall cocktail glass, and add a half ounce of orange liqueur, three ounces of prosecco, and one to two ounces of cranberry juice to top it off. I prefer a higher bubbles-to-juice ratio in my own cocktails, so I might add a little more prosecco and a little less cranberry juice. But that’s the beauty of this drink—it’s totally customizable and darn near impossible to mess up.

To garnish, you can use a sprig of rosemary and sugared cranberries, like this Instagram creator, to make it extra festive. If you are someone who likes to go the extra mile, a dusting of sugar on the rim is another way to make this drink really shine. (I always forget about decorating the rim before I start making the drink, so this is a reminder for me as much as you.) If you put sugar on the rim, you could even call this a Frosted Poinsettia Cocktail!
Now that your drink is ready, there is one more requirement: truly enjoy this cocktail. You have to think of me, age eight, dressed like a poinsettia while going trick-or-treating with all my friends. Cheers!
