I have a teenage son who will eat two dinners and then have a midnight snack after playing video games with his friends. He’s growing, and every time I think he has enough clothes, he’s either worn them out or needs a larger size. We recently went shopping for T-shirts at Walmart, and by the time we found ones he liked, I didn’t have time to cook dinner.
I dashed through the freezer aisle and found a delicious solution: this frozen Homestyle Chicken Pot Pie from Walmart’s bettergoods line.

Why I Love Walmart’s bettergoods Homestyle Chicken Pot Pie
This chicken pot pie is really, really good. It’s also affordable for its size: For only $8.94, you get a nearly two-pound chicken pot pie with a striking golden-yellow crust.
When you open the package, there’s no inner plastic wrap, and the instructions call for baking at 350°F for 50 to 60 minutes. I have a convection oven, so when my son put it in at the recommended temperature, about 10 minutes later, my husband yelled, “The pie is burning!”
For the record, it was not burning, but he was right—the pie was heating up fast. I had my son reduce the heat to 300°F and place it on a lower rack in the oven. While it cooked, enticing smells of chicken wafted from my kitchen to my living room. The pie was finished in about 35 to 40 minutes, and it came out piping hot.
When we took the (unburnt) pie out of the oven, the aroma of chicken and thyme seasoning intensified, so much so that my mouth was watering. The crust was buttery and flaky, and the creamy filling was chock-full of diced chicken, carrots, onions, potatoes, and peas. It’s the kind of meal that’s good for your belly and your soul.
This is a perfect desperation dinner. Just add a bagged salad and something to drink, and you’ve got a complete meal.
The package says there are four servings of chicken pot pie, and I would add that they’re big servings. The fact that there was only one piece leftover is a testament to this chicken pot pie’s heartiness. It’s so good I might have to try Walmart’s bettergoods beef and turkey pot pies, too.
